Cheri Goemba

Landmark in Bhutan

Cheri Goemba, also known as Cheri Monastery, is one of Bhutan’s oldest and most significant Buddhist monasteries. Located near Mount Cheri, it sits about 14 kilometres north of Thimphu City. Built in 1620 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the monastery played a pivotal role in Bhutanese history. Zhabdrung spent over three years in strict retreat here before dedicating the rest of his life to the monastery.

During this time, he established the first Drukpa monastic order in Bhutan. His father’s ashes were smuggled from Tibet and enshrined within a richly decorated silver chorten inside the upper chambers of Cheri Goemba, adding to its historical and spiritual significance.

The Hike to the Monastery

The trek to Cheri Monastery typically takes around an hour from the bridge, though it may take longer for those unaccustomed to hiking. The trail begins by crossing a beautifully covered bridge over the Wang Chhu River before ascending steadily towards the monastery. The well-defined path, though steep, offers a scenic journey through lush forests, with fresh mountain air and a serene atmosphere accompanying hikers along the way.

Cheri Goemba is a peaceful retreat, visited mainly by Buddhist practitioners who come to pray and meditate. The breathtaking views from the top make the climb worthwhile, offering a stunning panorama of the river and the surrounding landscape.

Once at the monastery, visitors can admire its ornate architecture and absorb the spiritual ambience. However, photography is not permitted inside, meaning visitors must climb to the top to appreciate its inner sanctuaries. Descending the trail takes approximately 20–30 minutes, allowing hikers to enjoy the natural beauty of the forest and its tranquil surroundings.

The Present State of Cheri Goemba

Today, Cheri Monastery serves as an important retreat and teaching centre for the southern Tibetan Buddhist tradition. It attracts visitors from around the world who come to explore its history, experience its spiritual energy, and gain insights into Buddhist philosophy.

The monastery is home to about 30 monks who oversee religious activities and maintain the site. Due to its rich history, scenic beauty, and immersive hiking experience, Cheri Goemba has become a favoured destination for tourists, spiritual seekers, and students of Buddhism. It remains a significant venue for meditation, retreats, and scholarly studies, continuing its legacy as a centre of spiritual learning in Bhutan.
